The superfoods that make our skincare special

Botanical ingredients have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and skin care remedies. With the increasing demand for more natural beauty care, our botanical ingredients combined with special formulation, have become a key component to our success, particularly for hydration purposes.

At Akar Skin we take the natural route, creating skincare products made with powerful ingredients. Starting with two superfoods that have been trusted for centuries, goji berry and sea buckthorn, founder Kate Chen made it the brand’s mission to provide a collection of products formulated from nutrient-dense ingredients sourced directly from nature. Though we incorporate more than 70 plant-based superfoods and bioactives into our formulas, there are a few key ingredients, and the products they’re in, worth giving special attention to.

Sea Buckthorn and Goji Berry

Sourced directly from a sustainable farm on the Tibetan Plateau, our key ingredients are the stars of the show. Their beneficial properties have been recorded in Tibetan texts as far back as the 8th century. Already packed with powerful fatty acids and vitamins, the goji berries and sea buckthorns sourced from Tibet have double the usual nutritional profile due to the extreme altitude and climate. Goji berries are well known for their antioxidant properties that help protect against discoloration, inflammation, and the appearance of fine lines. Sea buckthorn helps to regenerate collagen to promote skin that appears firmer, smoother, and softer. Both ingredients can be found in almost all our skincare products, including the best-seller, Soothe Face Oil.

Jojoba Oil

The benefits of jojoba oil for skin have been known for quite some time, and we utilize its many valuable properties in a number of our products, from the Clarify Cleanser to the already mentioned Soothe Face Oil. Jojoba oil is a natural emollient and anti-inflammatory, meaning it both smooths and soothes your skin. On top of this, it creates a strong barrier for your skin, like the natural oils already there, to help protect your skin and promote a natural, healthy-looking glow.

White Willow Bark

Most everyone knows the benefits of salicylic acid in fighting off and preventing breakouts. Naturally occurring salicylic acid comes from white willow bark. As a beta hydroxy acid, this powerful ingredient both hydrates and exfoliates to encourage softer, cleaner skin. It also has antimicrobial properties, which is why it makes such a great addition to products designed for addressing blemishes. We use it in our Balance Toning Mist. Use it after cleansing for a moisturizing boost or spritz it after applying your makeup to help set your cosmetics with a beautifully dewy finish.

Sandalwood

Derived from the wood of the sandalwood tree, Sandalwood oil is used in many traditional medicine practices, known for its soothing and hydrating properties. It contains natural compounds that can help to reduce inflammation and redness, and can also help to soothe dry, irritated skin. Sandalwood can be found in our Soothe Face Oil.

Rose water (oil)

Made from the steam distillation of rose petals, rose water is known for its soothing and hydrating properties. Its richness in antioxidants helps to protect the skin from free radical damage, and it also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to calm irritated skin. Our Balance Toning Mist is a must-have for any skincare routine, whether you’re concerned about breakouts or not. Use it after cleansing for a moisturizing boost or spritz it after applying your makeup to help set your cosmetics with a beautifully dewy finish. You can also find rose water in our Soothe Moisturizer and Rosa Damascena flower oil in our Pure Lip Restoration.

Whether you are looking for a hydrating moisturizer or a refreshing toner, there are plenty of botanical ingredients in our line to choose from, and they are sure to leave your skin feeling naturally soft, smooth, and moisturized.
