Moon Milk Magic

Moon Milk Magic

Just when you think Instagram's done it all - from mermaid toasts to unicorn smoothies - it drops yet another dreamy concoction, moon milk. We've always been told that drinking a glass of warm milk before bed helps you drift off, well, moon milk is the new milk on the block.

Moon milk is an Ayurvedic remedy for sleeplessness, combining warm milk with adaptogens to concoct the creamy beverage that'll send you straight to dreamland. Adaptogens are commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine as they are non toxic plants that are known to resist stressors within your body. Just like its name suggests, adaptogens helps your body to adapt to your emotional and physical surroundings. These stress buffers helps you deal with stress more effectively by reacting with your stress hormones to tweak your physiological responses to stress. Not all adaptogens have the same functions, but they each have their own benefits that aid in stress relief. Here's a list of common adaptogens and their benefits:

1. Ashwagandha

Alleviates long-term stress, anxiety and any hormonal imbalances. Assists in deep sleep, which is why it is commonly used in moon milk.

2. Reishi

Boosts immunity and helps to lower blood sugar levels.

3. Turmeric

Reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and boosts immunity. Need we go on? Turmeric is essentially the go-to remedy for almost everything!

Still not convinced? We've come up with a simple moon milk recipe for you to try.

Golden Moon Milk

Ingredients
1 cup milk (the original moon milk recipes use cow's milk, but you can replace this with any plant-based milk of your choice)
1/4 teaspoon ashwagandha (or any other adaptogen)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder or ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Optional:
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon cardamom
Pinch of nutmeg

Preparation
  1. Heat up the milk in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent any lumps from forming.
  2. Stir in ashwagandha, turmeric, cinnamon, and any other additional ingredients of your choice. If you're adding honey, add it afterwards when the mixture has cooled.
  3. Stir continuously and cook until the milk is warmed through and the ingredients are well mixed.
  4. Remove from heat and pour mixture into a mug. Add more cinnamon/nutmeg/cardamom/honey for a sweeter flavor.

And voila! Your very own golden moon milk - the perfect bedtime beverage.
