Crystal blue skies & gorgeous waters will make anyone want to head to the beach this time of year. That's why Spring has turned into a time for many to unwind and appreciate the earths beauty... only one problem: the sun has a habit of leaving you with unhealthy, dry skin full of sun spots & wrinkles.
While it's easy to get lost for hours on the beach, sunbathing, relaxing, listening to the waves roll in, it's important to remember to protect yourself from the UVA rays that will damage your skin forever. I'm sure you're thinking, "It's okay, I have olive skin! I'll be fine!" or "I'm wearing SPF 50, there's no way the sun can harm my skin!" Well, unfortunately, due to the US Food & Drug Administrations federal laws on sunscreen (or lack there of), many sunscreens have flaws that we don't even know about. Most sunscreens are labeled by SPF level, however that only protects from sunburn protection - the UVB rays. UVA rays, on the other hand, are the ones that leave long lasting effects of skin darkening & aging because of it's capabilities to penetrate deep into the skin & impact your skins collagen. Sunblock, unlike sunscreen, usually protects from both UVA & UVB rays, so be sure to look at the label for sun protection capabilities.
In all reality, sunscreen & sunblock should be your last resort to sun protection. Here are some tips on other ways to save your skin:
- Cover up! - By wearing hats & coverups with UV protection, you are preventing your skin from being effected by the sun's dangerous UV's. There are many clothing lines that make clothing with UV protection, some include Columbia, REI & Cabana Life.
- Shade is Your Friend - Find a tree to go under or bring an umbrella! You won't regret it.
- Timing is Everything - Plan your time at the beach around when the sun is less hot. Go earlier in the day or in the late afternoon to avoid the harsh sun.
- Check the UV Index - Look up the UV index for the day before determining if it's safe to be in the sun at all.
